Getting Around

Once on Waiheke, you have a wide range of options for getting around. You can stretch your legs on our 100km of coastal and bush walking tracks, or hire a bike or electric bike to explore the populated western end of Waiheke Island. Note, the island does have many hills, so unless you’re a strong experienced bike rider, electric bikes may be the better option. Electric scooters are another fun way of getting around, and are also popular on the island. Rental cars are a great option for getting around, and you can collect them when you get off the ferry.
There are many tour operators, offering vineyard, cultural, and sight-seeing tours. You can also enjoy a panoramic view of Waiheke’s coast line on a sea tour, or see it’s beauty as you fly over it.

The island has bus services, starting from Matiatia Wharf and heading through Oneroa (adult/child $2/1, three minutes) on their way to all the main settlements, as far west as Onetangi (adult/child $5.50/3, 35 minutes). Some services in the middle of the day can be as much as an hour apart, so to avoid lengthy waits at bus stops, consult a timetable from Auckland Transport.

Another option is the Waiheke Island Explorer bus, a hop-on, hop-off service covering 17 different stops around the island. A full circuit takes 90 minutes and attractions along the route include vineyards, beaches, activities and restaurants.
