Today marks a very special day for Aotearoa ✨

Matariki marks the start of the Māori New Year, and is signified by a beautiful cluster of stars that reappears in our early morning sky during the mid-winter months. The dates vary each year according to tribes and geography, but generally align from late May to early July.

At different times of the year, you can see this well known cluster of stars around the globe. It is one of the brightest clusters in the sky, containing hundreds of member stars. The best time to view the Matariki cluster is early morning, just before dawn.

Matariki is known by different names across the world. In Japan it is known as 'Subaru', meaning ‘gathered together’. In Hawaiian it is Makali’i, meaning ‘eyes of royalty', and in English, it is called by its ancient Greek name, 'Pleiades' or the 'Seven Sisters'.

Matariki is about reflecting on the past year, celebrating the present, and planning for the year ahead. It's also about reconnecting with your home and whānau.

Historically, these stars have been closely tied to planting, harvesting and hunting. It is thought that if the stars appeared clear and bright, it signified an abundant season ahead.

This is the first year (2022) that Matariki will be celebrated as an official public holiday here in Aotearoa, marking the reappearance of the constellation.

Today we will be spending this day with our loved ones, to reflect, plan, cherish and pay our respects to our beautiful country, and those who came before us.

Akito are known for their signature Turkish Eggs and the Banana Hotcakes with whipped coconut cream. For winter they have added some new flavours like the Miso Mushrooms, served with lemon cashew cream, and spring onion & sesame salsa and the Impossible Beef Kofta with butterbean puree, winter & house made pickles.

All of their dishes are 🌱vegetarian🌱…though you wouldn’t know it. As no creative detail has been left unturned. Their menu has been designed to warm your soul and nourish your bellies. So no one leaves feeling unsatisfied….not even the bacon lovers 🥓
